(I love the sarcasm laced in this report ) The News The Dolphins will find out on Tuesday whether or not they will have the right to collect $8.6 million from retired running back Ricky Williams, but in the process Ricky may free himself from his contractual obligation to the team and become a free agent. A Miami bankruptcy attorney told the Miami Herald that Williams could file for bankruptcy, under the terms of which he would have to forfeit all of his assets (except one of his homes) and the Dolphins would get a portion of the $8.6 million they feel they are owed, but Ricky would no longer be bound by the terms of a Dolphins' contract that has three years remaining on it. Our View An arbitrator is expected to rule on whether or not the team can recoup $5.3 million in incentives paid to Ricky over the last two years, plus $3.3 million paid by the Saints in 1999. In similar cases, rulings have favored NFL teams getting the money back, so Williams may have no choice but to consider the bankruptcy route, which would also free him from the remaining contract and allow him freedom to negotiate a new contract with other NFL teams if he decided to return next season. But the poor guy would have to give up every single outrageously expensive home or beach villa he owns! Except the one measly Miami mansion! How can someone be expected to live in just one home? There's also that whole recreational pot smoking and failed drug testing issue to deal with, too.
